The 411: Eyelash Extensions

When it comes to hair and makeup I am all in. I love watching YouTube tutorials, learning new techniques and just feeling pretty when I leave the house. One thing I could never get used too though, is applying fake lashes. Don’t get me wrong, I love having a sexy flutter and I think lashes look stunning in photos but wearing them is a whole other story. A couple weeks ago I had a makeup trial for my wedding, it turned out great but after wearing false lashes for about 15 minutes, I was ready to rip them off. They felt so heavy and unnatural plus, I don’t have the patience to apply them on my own.

On my wedding day I want to look like a better version of myself, not to overdone. So I decided maybe I can try a different route, eyelash extensions. Apprehensive at first, a friend of mine, Stephanie Marie, reassured me they are safe and don’t damage the natural lash. She is an aesthetician, at Salon Four in Scotch Plains, New Jersey so naturally I booked an appointment with her.

The Process

Think of it as a spa day. At arrival, Stephanie gave me some information about the process, how it works and the end result. Based on your preferences she will work to create your desired look. From there, I laid down, listened to the relaxing music and let her work her magic. The whole process took about two hours.

How It Works

Eyelash extensions are individual lashes, which are glued one by one to each of your top lashes. The process is repeated, one lash at a time. At the end, you’ll have around 80 to 100 lashes per eye which create length and volume for your desired look.

Maintenance

If maintained properly eyelash extensions can last up to six weeks. You want to avoid water for the first 24 hours after application to make sure the lash glue “cures.” Stephanie provided me with a maintenance kit which included a foam cleanser and brush. She recommended brushing the lashes nightly to help them keep their shape. She also mentioned avoiding oil based products and waterproof mascara.

Longevity

Just like your natural lashes your eyelash extensions will shed once your natural lash has completed its growth cycle. From person to person it may vary but getting a touchup every three to four weeks is recommended to maintain your desired look.

Myth: Eyelash extensions ruin your own lashes

If applied correctly your eyelashes extensions will not affect your natural lash. Just be sure to avoid rubbing, tugging or pulling on the extensions. I have heard girls say that they destroyed their natural lash, but I haven’t experienced that at all neither have my friends. So far, I am extremely happy with my results! I also rarely think about them, they look and feel natural. Plus, they save me so much time in the morning because I just skip the mascara – no need!

Final Thoughts

After all is said and done, I am so happy I went through with getting eyelash extensions. I love the way they look, even without makeup. If I had one warning: You will get addicted, it’s just a fact. Whether you have a special occasion or you just feel like treating yourself, I highly recommend it! Just like I couldn’t live without my mascara, now I can’t live without eyelash extensions!

NOTE: If you are interested in getting eyelash extensions be sure to find a technician who is certified. If you’re in New Jersey, I recommend Stephanie Marie Aesthetics located inside Salon Four in Scotch Plains. You can find all her information below.

I, too, love the look of falsies, but hate the way they feel on my eyes. I feel like I have a caterpillar just resting on my lashes, haha, so uncomfortable! I’ve thought about extensions too, but I do tend to rub and touch my eyes and now that you mentioned it’s suggested you don’t use makeup remover, I’m wondering how I’d get my liner off. Can you use micellar water? Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts with us, girlie, and I hope you’re having a great day so far!

Jalisa, thank you for your comment doll! Regarding my cleansing routine — it hasn’t changed at all. I still use my regular face wash and makeup remover wipes. For the first 24 hours you want to avoid any water to make sure the glue is dried. I wear a black eye liner regularly and to remove it I use my makeup wipes without drenching my lashes in the product. The eyelash extensions feel like they are a part of me, I don’t think about them or worry too much when cleansing. It took a day or two to get over the fear but after that they are very easy to manage. I am extremely happy with them, just like you I hated wearing fake lashes they were so heavy and uncomfortable. I hope I answered your question.

      Have a wonderful day!
      Xoxo, Maggie

Just found your blog today and you are so gorgeous! Those lashes look incredible. If I wasn’t allergic to the glue, I’d totally get it done.
